Dominant weekend for MP Motorsport in Austria

May 20, 2024 by

Dutch party at Red Bull Ring for Mp Motorsport with a double 1-2-3 and maiden wins in Eurocup-3 for Owen Tangavelou and Bruno del Pino.

After two important Free Practice sessions on Friday for all drivers in a new track on the calendar, then Qualy mood arrived with a one-off schedule with both Qualifying sessions celebrated on Saturday saving the race action for Sunday.

Owen Tangavelou was the fastest in Q1, taking his first official Pole Position in the series (he took first place too ahead R1 at Spa but using combined times of testing) while Christian Ho (Campos Racing) raised the stakes with Pole -his first ever in EC3- for Race 2 at the Red Bull Ring.

MP Motorsport secured a first 1-2-3 in Race 1 with Owen Tangavelou winning by two seconds over Bruno del Pino and five seconds over Emerson Fittipaldi Jr. The race, a quite one, was nevertheless full of penalties, with five- and ten-second penalties in abundance and, inevitably, as many as five black flags.

Off the podium were Kirill Smal (Palou Motorsport) in fourth and Noah Lisle (Campos Racing) in fifth, ahead of the two Saintéloc drivers Alexander Abkhazava and José Garfias and Javier Sagerera, who climbed from P15 to  P8. Finally, Micheal Shin (Campos Racing) scored points, taking advantage of penalties given to Dario Cabanelas, who was tenth (MP Motorsport), to gain a position.

Once again, it was an unfortunate race for Christian Ho, who, starting from the front row, quickly lost his top positions and, while in ninth place, was forced into his second retirement out of two races.

MP Motorsport with no mercy

An outstanding weekend for Bruno del Pino (MP Motorsport) at Spielberg, during the second round of the Eurocup-3: second in race 1, the Spanish driver overtook Poleman Christian Ho (Campos Racing) and led comfortably from start to finish in a race shortened by six minutes—from 30 to 24—due to previous delays.

Having lost the lead, Ho would have finished the race in second place, but a 5-second penalty for track limits dropped him to fourth. The Campos driver has speed, but this time has not yet managed to capitalize on it. Instead, Javier Sagrera (MP Motorsport) took second place on the podium, reclaiming the (solitary) lead in the standings from his teammate Owen Tangavelou, the race 1 winner, who had a less fortunate start but still managed to finish in third place.

Emerson Fittipaldi Jr. (MP Motorsport) finished fifth, ahead of Valentin Kluss and Micheal Shin, the Campos duo who secured their first points for the German with a respectable weekend for the South Korean. Isaac Barashi (GRS Team), a superb Daniel Nogales (Drivex), and Noah Lisle (Campos Racing) rounded out the points in eighth, ninth, and tenth places, with the latter benefiting from the retirement of Kirill Smal (Palou Motorsport), who was eighth until that moment.

Taking into account the results at the Red Bull Ring, Javier Sagrera retains the lead with 48 points over Bruno del Pino (43), Owen Tangavelou (43), Emerson Fittipaldi Jr (37) and Kirill Smal (27). Valentin Klaus still as the best rookie with 49 points ahead Dario Cabanelas and Theodor Jensen while MP Mottorsport has had an almost perfect weekend with 87 of 88 points scored and now their lead rises to 85 points over Campos Racing

The Eurocup-3 will return to the track in Portimão, at the Autodromo International do Algarve on June 7-9.
